The East Coast is home to some of New Zealand’s greatest surf spots. For beginners Waiotahi and Tirohanga provide good beach breaks, and a northerly swell provides excellent waves at Hawai, Motu River mouth and Hicks Bay.  With a multitude of reef breaks and white sand beaches, Gisborne is known as the surfing capital of New Zealand.
